SCANDINAVIAN 5.03: R5B: Art and Authorship in the Norwegian Fin de siecle: Ibsen, Hamsun, Munch, Session A, May 26 – July 2

Toward the end of the Nineteenth Century, Scandinavian art and literature was in the midst of a major shift in focus and priorities. No longer primarily concerned with the debating of social and political issues, authors and artists of the upcoming generation saw themselves as ushering in a completely new kind of art, one that turned its attention upon the mysterious inner life of the modern human. Unabashedly subjective and psychological in its orientation, this new art focused on the expression of extreme mental and emotional states. This course will examine this literary-historical shift by focusing on three influential Norwegian cultural figures at the end of the century: the playwright Henrik Ibsen, the novelist Knut Hamsun, and the painter Edvard Munch. We will investigate the ways in which these three figures situated their work in relation to one another, and in relation to the artistic and cultural currents of the time.

SCANDINAVIAN 5.01: R5B: Where I Ought to Be: Place in Norwegian Literature, Session A, May 26 – July 2

Place often becomes invisible in daily life. Not until we encounter a landscape or location that is somehow exceptional—a dramatic mountaintop, a sacred temple, an overwhelming city skyline—do we bring our attention to our surroundings. Whether depicting a remote, inhospitable seascape or the streets of a recently urbanized capital city, Scandinavian authors have used place as setting, symbol, and even character across a variety of genres. In this course, we will be reading texts by several major Scandinavian authors, while paying particular attention to place—the understandings of place apparent in them, the formal techniques used to depict place, and the changes that take place to the Scandinavian relationship to place over time. We will also read several theorists of place and discuss their applicability to the Scandinavian context.

As a course designed to fulfill the objectives of Reading and Composition R5B, the main purpose of this course is to prepare students to complete an independent research project. As such, we will begin discussions in class which students will learn to pursue more deeply on their own. Along the way, we will practice critical reading, posing research questions, gathering sources, taking useful notes, and formulating original arguments that are supported with evidence, and, ultimately, presenting these results in an organized research essay, composed in a compelling and readable style.

“Now the whole life of mortal men, what is it but a sort of play, in which various persons make their entrances in various costumes, and each one plays his own part until the director gives him his cue to leave the stage? Often he also orders one and the same actor to come on in different costumes, so that the actor who just now played the king in royal scarlet now comes on in rags to play a miserable servant. True, all these images are unreal, but this play cannot be performed in any other way.”

Considering that we tend to think of personas as extraneous to persons or personalities, it may come as a surprise that the word person etymologically derives from the word persona rather than the other way around. This Latin term refers to the masks originally worn by actors in Greek, and later Roman, drama, by which the audience was able to identify the characters (or types) they represented. At the same time, the holes in these masks amplified the sound of the actor’s own voices (per sonare meaning to sound through).

This class will be devoted to exploring personas as acts or roles that simultaneously conceal and reveal the people behind them and the collaborations between actors, directors, and audiences that underlie them. What personas, we will ask ourselves, are being crafted in our texts? Who crafts or projects them and to what personal, social, or philosophical ends? What influence do context and culture have? Are these impersonations performed successfully? How are multiple personas reconciled with one another, or with a “true” self? How, indeed, do we, or can we even, differentiate between the person and the persona?

Already in the Classical period, personas became associated not just with role-play in the theater but with role-play in everyday life. Thus, in exploring the personas featured on our syllabus, we can reflect on those all of us, whether or not we’re aware of it, perform in our own lives: in our various relationships, in our work, and online. Who are we, really?
