Congratulations, Prof. Linda Haverty Rugg!

After 25 years on campus, Professor Linda Rugg has retired in Summer 2024.

The Department of Scandinavian has benefited immensely for the past twenty-five years from the teaching and research of Professor Linda Haverty Rugg, who has pioneered courses on the environmental humanities, childhood studies, the films of Ingmar Bergman, Strindberg’s drama, and race and ethnicity in the North/North America. Her innovative research in photographic and filmic autobiography resulted in two books, Picturing Ourselves: Photography and Autobiography (University of Chicago Press, 1997) and Self-Projection: The Director’s Image in Art Cinema (University of Minnesota Press, 2014), and during the past several years, Professor Rugg served as UC Berkeley’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Research. Professor Rugg retired on July 1, 2024, and students and colleagues alike will miss her substantial contributions to the department and to campus. Congratulations, Linda, on a well deserved retirement!
