Research Funding Sources
 

Students enrolled in the M.A./Ph.D. program in the Department of Scandinavian are eligible to apply for a variety of research grants both inside and outside the department. These fellowships can be used to fund research in Scandinavia, both during the summer and the academic year.

UCB Awards:

Fritz O. Fernstrom Traveling Fellowship
This research fellowship is administered by a selection committee within the Department of Scandinavian. According to the terms of the gift, priority will be given to graduate students who propose to conduct research projects on language and literature topics in Sweden, but awards can also be given for travel to all Nordic countries, and to UCB students in all academic fields. Proposals for summer travel stipends and year-long grants are decided in the same round of applications. Institute of European Studies Graduate Dissertation Fellowships
IES Graduate Dissertation Research and Writing Fellowships fund graduate students whose dissertations focus on topics related to Western Europe and the European Union.

Summer FLAS
Enables students who are U.S. citizens and permanent residents to acquire a high level of competence in one or more foreign languages. Fellowships are awarded to students in modern foreign language and area studies, with priority given to students in the humanities, social sciences, and professional fields. For academic year awards, entering students must submit the combined Graduate Application for Admission and Fellowships by the departmental deadline. Continuing students should pick up an application and apply directly to the Graduate Fellowships Office, 318 Sproul Hall.

Fulbright Fellowship
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers opportunities for recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, and developing professionals and artists to conduct career-launching study and research abroad.

American-Scandinavian Foundation
Fellowships allow students to research in Scandinavia during an entire academic year.

Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarship
The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to greater understanding of their host countries.

SWEA International Scholarship
Scholarships will be awarded to a well merited doctoral candidate in Swedish language, literature and area studies. It is specifically directed towards candidates who are well into the process of writing their dissertation. The scholar must be residing permanently outside Sweden and be studying at a non-Swedish university.

SWEA San Francisco's Annual Fellowship
One annual fellowship in the amount of $5000. For more information please contact SWEA San Francisco.

Gudrun Gytel Fund Scholarships
The Gudrun Gytel Fund was established in 1998 in order to provide qualified American University students with the opportunity to further their knowledge of Danish culture, history, language, literature, politics and society. The scholarship supports semester or academic year-long study at recognized Danish institutions of higher education in the fields of humanities and social sciences, as well as in architecture, engineering, technology and related fields.
